THE LONG WALK

Shannon Jensen has a great essay in Newsweek International in the 3  September 2012 issue from South Sudan. The photojournalist travelled in the country June-July this year, and photographed shoes belonging to the 30.000 refugees who had travelled by foot across the border from Sudan’s Blue Nile state over to neighboring South Sudan to join a population of 70,000 refugees who preceded them in fleeing Khartoum’s deadly military campaign to crush the northern remnant of the Southern liberation movement

MAKE A BETTER WORLD WITH A SHOE

Toms shoes - one for one movement
The founder, Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina when he visited and found that they had no shoes to protect their feet and thus came up with this admirable idea. They do this by recognizing communities that need shoes and provide for the children in other to protect their health.
TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need with every pair of TOMS purchased- they come in various and fashionable colors and designs.

Toms ‘shoes are carried by MA MAISON – one of the coolest Milanese shoes ‘stores.

The owner, Barbara Beryl is a renowned talent scout in the fashion world and, after managing the footwear family shop—La vetrina di Beryl in Milan—she opened her personal space. Shoes are sourced from around the world from sophisticated young designers and established high fashion established brands.

ROMA RAINBOOTS -Roma Provisions combines fashion with charity. They design and sell rain boots while their subsidiary - Roma for All - distributes boots to children living in poverty, mostly street children and orphans
TWINS FOR PEACE'S Social Good mission is to create a shoe that is simple and elegant and at the same time cool and socially responsible. TWINS’ philosophy is about sharing: BE COOL, BE GOOD. TWINS’ goal is to make children’s lives happier. When you buy a pair of TWINS, you donate a pair to a child: One for One.

SSEKO SAY-KO -This brand was created to help bright young women in Uganda continue their education. The Ugandan school system is designed with a nine-month gap between secondary school and university. These nine months are intended to allow time for students to earn money for tuition before continuing on to university. However, in an impoverished and male dominated society, many of these young women struggle to find fair work during this time.
Sseko Designs hires recent secondary school graduates for this 9 month period to live and work together, while earning money that will go directly towards their university education. These women will not make sandals forever. They will go on to be doctors, lawyers, politicians, writers and teachers that will bring change and unification to a country divided and ravished by a 22 year-long war.

SHOE 4 AFRICA -back in 1995 the founder, Toby Tanser, was training athletics in Kenya. Lost on foot in the Mara he discovered true charity and support from the Kenyan people. Leaving Kenya (shoeless) he was arrested as a vagrant, upon arriving in Sweden (in the snow). He discovered others too wished to help and give shoes.
Déc 1995 Shoe4Africa starts in Eldoret, Kenya. Operating by sending over shoes to Kenyan athletes.
HOW TO HELP THEM: Send a pair of running - running shoes prevent hookworm and promote a person to adopt a more healthy lifestyle – or sponsor a runner or buy a brick of the hospital they’re building or help them to renovate schools.

PAINTING FAVELA -In 2006, the Dutch artist duo Haas&Hanh started developing the idea of creating community-driven art interventions in Brazil. Their efforts yielded two murals, which were painted in Vila Cruzeiro, Rio's most notorious slum, in collaboration with local youth.
Their second large painting in Vila Cruzeiro was finished in 2008, It was situated on a massive concrete structure, built to protect the hill from mudslides during the rainy season.

The initial idea of the Favela Painting project has always been to paint an entire hillside favela in the center of Rio, visible to all inhabitants and visitors. As the portuguese translation for 'the hill'; 'o morro' is also used as a synonym for slum or favela, they choose to use this name for the third stage of the Favela Painting project. 'O Morro'
In order to realize this dream, the Firmeza Foundation has chosen to initiate a funding mechanism that compliments the large scale, community oriented nature of this project. Rather than seeking a lump sum from established art institutions or wealthy patrons, the 'O Morro' project will be sponsored by a community of supporters, who will finance the infrastructure, materials, and workforce needed to complete the work.

People are asked to join this community and become an active participant in a dream making a donation of any size but by donating 1.000euro or more to the Firmeza Foundation it’s possible to become a co-founders of the 'O Morro' project

  • COMMUNITY COOKER (Jiko ya jamii in Swahili)
In the mid-1990s, Nairobi-based architect Jim Archer was increasingly concerned about the amount of discarded refuse piling up in Kenya and many other developing countries. He designed the Community Cooker as a simple, inexpensive machine, easily built and repaired by local communities, with minimal operating expenses. The trash is sorted onto racks, dried, and shoveled down a slide into the burn box- non-combustibles like rubber and glass are set aside, of course-
